<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Just about every business of any type we deal with these days has been sending out self-congratulatory emails explaining how they have plans in place to deal with the pandemic.

Fortunately, our industry (localization) is very amenable to working from remote locations. Translation is an art, but also a service that is almost always done on computers these days. Thus, one would expect very little disruption in the service chain that provides localization services.

So instead of touting all the preparations every company says they have made (they all really had prepared for this beforehand? For a once in a lifetime event?), we at Admerix can say that we are grateful to be in this industry and for everything it has given us. We are thankful we can participate in an industry that facilitates understanding between cultures and between people.

And most of all thankful that all of our staff are (as of now) safe and sound.

Please stay safe. We will get through this.

We aren't an agency.

We are not trying to develop some magic on-line program to eliminate translators from translation...

Or come up with some online system so we can fire the project managers and get interns to do PM work...

Nor are we trying to merge with other companies.

We are professional managers and linguists managing important projects.

- Just a little rant today from the project managers at Admerix. :)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Everyone has long been afraid of Trados—having to buy a tool from
another translation company (as well as the information it might leak). However, the bottom line for linguists already invested and trained
in Trados is that there is little incentive to invest in every new tool that
appears. And when a company insists on a particular tool it just limits the
pool of qualified and reasonably priced linguists. I can’t tell you how many times we
encounter dejected vendors and project managers who simply can’t find the right
translators because upper management declared that using an obscure tool would
solve everyone’s problems.

Anyone in the industry for a few years will pick up on some of these "coming trends" that never seem to arrive:

* There will be an industry leader (think the Microsoft of translation)

Instead we have companies growing by being bought up and merging (think, "we are all out of ideas of how to add value and gain customers thus we can just buy other company's customers")

* All translation will be done online, for free (Wikipedia style) by the cloud

This is a misunderstanding of the most basic tenants of the art of translation—that not everyone who speaks two languages is instantly a translator.

* All human translation will just be editing of machine translation

Most professional linguists will not work for a cut rate to edit often substandard machine translation—"first we have to spend thousands on translation tools so we can get paid a lower rate for our work. Now MT means an even more fragmented rate."

* Maybe not said, but suspected: Translators will get smart, work directly with end clients and cut out the middleman (after all, programs like Trados include each linguist's email right in the TM)

This thought goes hand in hand with the dream that online systems will eliminate the need for the project manager, the SLV, etc. Linguists cannot work directly with clients because they cannot take the incessant (and sometimes crazy) demands of end clients--as well as the big MLVs and their frazzled intern project managers.

Of course our industry will change and is changing, but it really seems that over the years there has been an exuberance of declaring some new trend will fundamentally alter the business--and then we never see that trend arrive.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The rush to install time saving systems so that we can be more efficient and streamlined is, after all this time and evolution of the processes, still a dream that is not realized.

We work with many clients who seem to have a lot of faith in a technology based solutions. These promise to cut costs (mostly their personnel costs) with a magical system that will streamline the process, eliminate the need for an experienced localization industry project manager, and have translations inserted into an online platform that makes delivery to client automated and faster.

Truth is that no such fairy tale is happening. We are out here in the real world, working consistently to deliver high quality translations that will fully meet the end client's expectations--often within demanding delivery schedules. Most of the time we are working around such systems.

We are finding that the many language service providers are being sold into translation platforms and project management systems that raise expectations far beyond what is actually available out here in the real world.

Let us clear away the hype and try to see what is going down at the coal face where the real work is actually being produced.

Most translation work done is today, just as it always has been, by professional freelance translators working to support an ever growing industry. These professionals are working feverishly every day trying to rise to the challenges that are constantly thrown their way by the software and platform generating gurus who only seek to cash in on their work by promising translation buyers even greater returns through their "revolutionary" systems.

Then there is the rush to have a computer do it all. However, in reality, there is no escape from the simple fact that machine translation output is unacceptably poor. So now there are demands being put on professional linguists to convert such output into high quality target language text by a process now called PMTE (post machine translation editing). More and more we are seeing this being requested as if it were a legitimate localization industry process.

The founders of Admerix have been closely involved with the introduction and development of machine translation since 2004 when we attended seminars that promised super high-speed multi-language machine translation from any language to any target language. The boast was that this would be achieved within six months and it would have a quality standard of 96% that of human translation.

14 years on and that prediction seems to be just as unlikely as ever it was.

Of course, the offered payment for PMTE is a fraction of the normal translation rates. Translation buyers, charged by the hype of those with large investments in machine translation as well as some large LSPs who are looking to fatten their margins, are working hard to get professional linguists to take on full responsibility of final translation results at a fraction of the normal translation rate.

For now, most professional linguists are not interested, nor is it cost or time effective, for them to try to re-translate the mess that most machine translation produces.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This comes up enough that I thought would we should mention it here: These languages are not
similar enough to be able to edit from one to the other. Oddly enough, many linguists in both languages believe it can be done, but see what they say when you give them a project and ask them to do it!
In the real world we still depend on expert linguists despite the lure of cheap crowd-sourced work or an automatic miracle.

We also know that even when the most qualified subject specialist is employed on a project, others who edit/proofread/check their work will attempt to take it apart, often for completely unjustified reasons, perhaps as a justification for their own employment as an editor. This is just a syndrome we have to account for in the very subjective realm of localization.

So even top experts are disputed by other experts. Augmented or MT does not really address, in any way, the actual quality of a translation and the subjective decisions that have to be made.

Where it does come into play, we suspect, is as another attempt to chip away at what translators are paid. First it was the translation tools like Trados which had as their first advantage that an employer could discount repetitions and not have to pay a full-word rate for each word translated.

Now exactly the same thing is happening with MT--linguists are asked to assume every word is essentially a repetition and then vouch for the work for a fraction of their per word rate (or even an hourly rate). It seems incredible that any professional linguist would willingly accept such a bargain.

This race to minimize or eliminate the cost of the human element in any field is always going to be a driving element in business. However, the editor and the subjective decision are likely to remain part of the industry for a long time to come.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Even in that subject-matter area, which a layman would think is very literal, we often have editors and reviewers who argue over issues of style and tone--even in a rice-cooker manual.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hearing that Google's n<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">eural machine translation quality has been over-hyped sounds strangely familiar. It brought to mind the claims made about a
fantastic new approach called "statistical machine translation" made by dozens of players over the last decade.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Not to say that machine translation of whatever stripe does not have its
place. Every day we are seeing the creative use of these tools. However, developers cannot seem to resist making the claim that their results are "as
good – or almost as good – as human translation." Such claims in the past have
proven to be nonsense--and are usually the verbalization of fantasies of developers
and those who had to justify the amount of money they threw at the
process.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For the translation community, the fact that translation done by a
computer is still not much better is good reason to relax a bit. These latest
claims will always get a lot of attention when initially made because, such a
development, if true, can impact the lives and livelihoods of many linguists all
over the world. They fulfill the dream of the large localization companies that spend their days trying to eliminate translators from the translation process. However, professional translators see their work as a creative art form, not something that can replaced by a machine.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Showing graphs of how good machine translation results are is
like telling people how beautiful your sister is, but not letting anyone see her. Show us the actual results of the machine translation output without any tinkering or
"adjustments" afterwards, and we can then see for ourselves how good it really
is. And start with marketing texts for fashion products into Japanese!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the meantime, don't waste our time. We are busy providing top quality real translation work that our customers can rely on for accuracy. This means they have
confidence it will be fit for the purpose for their target audience... And we do it
within a reasonable budget and bring the projects in on schedule... every
time. And when it is done, the customers can ask a real live linguist why they made
a choice of terminology, or style, or tone, or any one of the other
facets of final translation work that must be taken into account during the
process.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Can <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">n<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">eural machine translation really take any text and instantly spew out an "almost as good"
translation? Even work by top-notch linguists is often rejected by other linguists. It is likely that the claims of <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> "almost as good"
translation still won't stand up in the real world where translation has to be created for real people to read and understand.

the years there have been many exuberant predictions of change that
would fundamentally alter the localization business. However, most of
these dreams of the industry have never come to pass.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Trends that never arrived: Maybe not said, but suspected:
Translators will get smart and start working directly with end clients and cut

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After all, programs like Trados passively provide each
linguist’s contact email right in the TM. If one really believes project
managers and engineers are only a cost to a project, then why not work cut them out and work directly with the linguist?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The reality is that translators do not seem to be able to deal with the
incessant (and sometimes crazy) demands of end clients that often do not follow any reasonable demands one would make of a contractor. These clients <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">tend to treat <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">linguists as <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">salaried workers who have sold their time to be on call for company <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">improvement meetings and Skype calls.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Even worse are the big MLVs
and their frazzled intern (“working for free”) project managers. The treatment these interns mete out to freelancers means they can use each linguist once and they will be lucky if the linguist does n<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">ot <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">disappear <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">halfway <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">through the project.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The idea that
linguists could start working with end clients totally ignores the critical role
project managers and engineers with <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">localization-industry experience contribute to the ultimate success of projects. Project <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">management is <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">important <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">in addressing the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">mid-project twists and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">turns that seem to be a part of every project of value.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It also takes a lot of work to train <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">and nurture linguists. Over time, the working <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">relationships and expertise developed, especially with regards to <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">specialty subject matter, become an invaluable resource that cannot be replicated by a random freelancer trying to solve every problem of a <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">contemptuous end client.

translation company. Fears over the ramifications of this has<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> likely fueled the spectacular

But when <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">companies <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">insist on their own tool, these <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">linguists risk their <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">livelihood if they cannot quickly move to the new tool.

linguists is regularly knocked back for being “completely wrong.” This is due
to style, tone and other factors specific to each tongue, and it takes nothing
less than trained, experienced linguists working with client feedback to get it
sounding correct to the client’s ear.

<![endif]--><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Over
the years there have been many exuberant predictions of change that
would fundamentally alter the localization business. However, most of
these dreams of the industry have never come to pass.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Trends that never arrived: All translation will be done
online

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is really the dream--that project managers and SLVs can
be eliminated by somehow automating the process flow of localization. This
posits that project managers and engineers do not really add anything valuable
to the localization process and can thus be factored out of the equation.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many of these systems succumb to the lure of being used to
lock clients in to proprietary methods and raise the cost of switching to the
competition. Those in localization production hate such systems when end
clients, allowed to log on and check the progress of their jobs, use them to
second guess project managers on projects they think are behind schedule.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ultimately<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">, the online translation model is predicated on the idea that all content can be <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">economically <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">produced <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">or molded to fit such a system. The reality is that content most often comes in many non<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">-ideal <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">forms (non-unicode websites, scanned pdfs, legal <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">exhibits, quirky elearning platforms, etc.) and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">these kinds of projects <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">are higher volume and thus high<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">er value.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The online model might be suitable for translating a couple page Word document, but when it comes to complex source files--not to mention layout issues later--a simple online translation syst<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">em is not going to get the job done.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">NEXT: Trends that never arrived: All translation will be
